Berrio Mill Chutneys
A fresh salad, cheese sandwich or a crusty roll with home cured ham. They all benefit from a generous spoonful of homemade chutney. Why homemade you might ask. Simply it is a sure sign of quality. Imagine how much time it takes to simmer a large cooking kettle of chutney (typically 150 litres or 450 jars) to make it thick enough to stay in a cheese sandwich or on a piece of meat. By the time it gets to the right consistency it has lost much of its flavour and cost a fortune in gas or electricity. The solution of large producers is to add modified starch. This makes the whole process fast and the manufacturer sells more of their thickened water to their unsuspecting customers.
At Berrio Mill we make our chutneys in a batch no more than 8 litres (about 25 jars) and do not use a thickening agent such as modified starch. The vegetables are peeled and chopped by hand and the jars individually filled using a jug and a funnel. Our vegetables and fruit come from our neighbours and local growers. We also grow our own vegetables and fruit including marrows, courgettes, runner beans, onions, garlic, chillies, tomatoes and apples.
We are very happy to meet with our customers and to give advice on how to make chutneys for themselves. Our main aim is to keep a tradition going, with no shortcuts or artificial aids. We have been approached by major retailers and wholesalers on several occasions, but we will not compromise our high standards and total hands-on approach. You will find below a list of much of what we do. Please bear in mind, we are not a factory and can only make chutneys using what is available from season to season, so some items may be in short supply.
